The Mitato of Amorgos participated in the 4th Islanders’ Forum which was successfully organised by the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF) on the island of Paros, from 28 to 30 October 2022.

The Forum was attended by 45 participants, representing 30 organisations from 17 islands, from the Cyclades and beyond.

The presentations realised during the first two days aimed at introducing the people and organisations present to each other, as we are all tied with common problems and visions, in order to create the ground for further discussion, exchange of ideas and the generation of synergies. The lectures also included the presentation of tools for better liaising and connection between the participating organisations, as well as proposals and financing suggestions for environmental and cultural initiatives.

Apart from the works of the Forum, participants had the chance to visit the Aegean Wildlife Hospital “Alkyoni”, Paros Park, where we walked through the hiking routes and learned about the nature and history of the area, as well as the ancient marble quarries in Marathi.

We would like to wholeheartedly thank the organisers for the excellent hospitality and organisation, as well as the volunteering hosts at the points we visited: Alkyoni, Association of Friends of Paros Park and the Cultural Centre of Paros “Archilochos”..

Social and Anthropological Aspects of Amorgian Craftmanship and the Art of Dry Stone Walling

"The Mitato of Amorgos" was created in 2020 by a group of people who share common concerns and a common vision for both the natural and the manmade environment of the island of Amorgos -and the Cyclades in general. As an organisation, during the previous years, we have worked towards the restoration of the extensive network of paths, namely the old, now partially closed, routes that used to connect the different areas of Amorgos in the past. Through this attempt, we have witnessed the importance of the dry-stone walls in the preservation and further revitalization of this network of paths. Besides, one can easily observe how dry stone walls, terraces, buildings, are not only embedded in the network of paths, but have also shaped the entire landscape of the area. In that sense, these stone structures are a cultural and material testimony to the time and work that generations of people have devoted to crafting the island’s landscape, as well as an invaluable intergenerational know-how.
