The International Scientific Society for Dry Stone Interdisciplinary Study (SPS) organized the 17th International Congress on Dry Stone Walling in Kovanle, Croatia, from 1 to 3 October 2021. The event was realized in continuation to the International Dry Stone Workshop, held from 27 to 30 September 2021 in Pločice village (Kovanle).

During these events, several issues regarding dry stone were discussed, such as the current situation, the prospects, and the contribution of modern technologies. The presentations included complete projects and works currently underway, innovative approaches to this traditional craft, such as the professional certification of dry stone masons, as well as particular examples of dry stone structures, such as the bee houses of Andros.

The Mitato of Amorgos participated in the Congress by presenting the upcoming Dry Stone Workshop “The Amorgian Craftsmanship”, which is about to be held from 11 to 15 October 2021 on the island of Amorgos. The presentation was realized online and the topics discussed included the goals of the workshop, the preparation works so far, the data from the participation forms received and the expected outcomes.

The session of lectures was followed by discussion with the audience, where advice for the organization of such events was shared, as well as interest in further information regarding the Dry Stone Workshop on Amorgos.

The participation in the Congress aimed at showcasing the efforts of the Mitato of Amorgos towards the inclusion of the island and the Cyclades in general in the international map of actions taken in the field of preservation and promotion of dry stone, as well as the exchange of knowledge and experience in this sector.

The Dry Stone Workshop “The Amorgian Craftsmanship”, which was presented at the 17th International Congress on Dry Stone Walling, is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Sport, the Secretariat-General of the Aegean and Island Policy, Blue Star Ferries, and it is realized with the support of Cyclades Preservation Fund and under the auspices of the Municipality of Amorgos.
