Welcoming students from the Lycée Agricole de Matiti, French Guiana

In the context of Erasmus+ programme, we welcomed in Amorgos the students of the Department of Management and Protection of Nature of the Lycée Agricole de Matiti, part of the French Guiana educational organisation EPLEFPA BTS, from 23 to 27 March 2026.

Planning of the activity was made in collaboration with the travel agencies Offbeat Travel and FindinGreece, offering the participants the opportunity to get to know Athens too, a necessary stop on their long journey to our island.

During their stay on the island of Amorgos, the 17 students and their accompanying professors worked with us in the restoration of dry stone walls in the outskirts of Langada, learning the craft from our craftsman Antonis Vlavianos. Furthermore, as part of their specialisation, the studied the flora and fauna of the area, particularly that of the micro-ecosystems created in dry stone structures.

The programme included a tour of Amorgos, offering time to familiarise with each other but also with the island and its inhabitants. We visited the old olive press of Langada, the Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa and the capital of Amorgos, Chora, coinciding with the celebrations of the Greek National Day on 25^th March. In addition, we enjoyed a hike in the area of Langada, so that the students could see a wider range of dry stone structures and other elements, such as cisterns, wells, stables, threshing circles and churches. At the same time, the spring view of the Amorgian nature between days of rainfall offered the ideal conditions for the study of the natural wealth of the island.

We are grateful for the opportunity we had to meet young people from so far away, to work and dance with them and share our interests – and we thank them for the company, as well as the special treats they brought us from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
